Chapter Twenty
Quin
They slept on his narrow bunk, him holding her tightly, unable to sleep as the night passed and the twin suns rose in the sky. Being with her, being inside her, had been a profound experience, striking him deep in his soul. It scared him. He wanted to go and tell Okil they had made a mistake. To implore the Hier Council to allow him to go on the mission with a fellow Karalian, anyone but this woman. She had awoken the thing inside him which wanted to protect her at all costs. And once she was pregnant, that need to protect would be worse. There lay his fear: what if his judgement was affected by his intense feelings for her?
She stirred, and he pulled himself away, dragging his body into the cool morning air, feeling her heat evaporate from his skin. He went to make some fresh tole and took two plates from the cupboard above the small sink. The bunkroom had little in the way of conveniences, but it had a small bathroom, a serviceable kitchen, a bed, and a sitting area. It was all he had needed, until now.
With a woman in his bed, his thoughts began to shift to the house he inherited from his father. To the large garden where their child would run free, where his son would play, just as Quin had played with his father. The only difference this time was there would be a female; his child would have a mother in his life. As long as they both survived this mission.
“Morning,” she said, her soft voice making him jump.
“Morning. I have some tole on. I am going to shower. This morning I have to go and check the preparations for tomorrow. You should take the opportunity to catch up on your sleep.”
I won’t argue with you there. I think I could sleep for a week or more. Yesterday was incredibly hard.” She smiled coyly, “And last night was just as exhausting, but in a much more pleasurable way.”
He had to agree; being with the sim had not prepared him for the depth of emotion he felt being with her, inside her. The colours still flashed across his skin, betraying his feelings. He needed a cold shower and to regain control before he left. He had to appear in complete control; he had no wish to lose his authority with the guard tasked with loading his cruiser with provisions.
The warriors were a class above the guards, and he needed to maintain his aloof air in his dealings with them. If not, they might get ideas he was a soft touch and that would never do. Not if he wanted his son to join the Hier Council.
Much was passed from father to son, and he didn’t want anyone gossiping behind his child’s back about how Quin had turned to mush once he was given a female from Earth. There was no room for weakness.
No room at all.
